Sputter Box is a clarinet, voice, percussion performance art ensemble committed to performing interdisciplinary pieces involving sound, theater, movement, visual art, and improvisation. Inspired by Sept Crimes de l’Amour by Georges Aperghis, Sputter Box decided to begin commissioning performance art works for their unique instrumentation. The trio is currently commissioning composers Niloufar Nourbakhsh, Alan Hankers, Chris Lucius Newman, and Joe Krycia. Sputter Box and the composers will be attending Avaloch Farm Music Institute this summer to create these pieces through collaborative composition workshops.
In addition to performing, Sputter Box hosts a monthly interdisciplinary arts improvisation event open to all artists and ability levels. Find out about their next Sputter (Open) Box Improv here.
Kathryn Vetter (a clarinetist who sometimes pretends to play the saxophone), Alina Tamborini (a non-stereotypical vocalist), and Peter White (a deceptively-quiet percussionist) met at Stony Brook University where they are all graduate students in the music department. When they are not rehearsing, Sputter Box can be found forgetting to complete trivial favors promised to each other.
